Met Jan Kienstra, inwoner van Nes op Ameland, is het hele buckfast verhaal begonnen. In 1987 kreeg Jan zijn eerste bijen van een bevriende collega van Terschelling. De eerste zes jaar werd er samen met bijenleraar Harry Dijkema ervaring opgedaan met teelt en selectie. In die tijd leerde Jan Kienstra twee imkers kennen : te weten Gosse van der Velde uit Groningen en Thomas Rueppel uit Duitsland. De vriendschap met Thomas is tot vandaag de dag nog zeer hecht. Door deze vriendschap kon Ameland ook heel vaak over topmateriaal beschikken.

Vanaf 1990 ging Jan zich ook echt serieus bezighouden met de teelt en selectie samen met zijn collega, zoals hij Gosse steevast noemde.

Peter, de zoon van Jan Kienstra ontwierp een mooi logo en  Jan vroeg bij Jean-Marie van Dijck, Karl Kehrle Foundation, de code AM.
